New SCBA office-bearers to restore democracy

Staff Report

LAHORE: Newly elected Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) office-bearers said on Tuesday that they were committed to restore the 1973 Constitution and to work for the welfare of lawyers.

SCBA president Munir A Malik condemned the government for continuing military operations in Balochistan, saying lawyers in the province were on hunger strike against the move. He expressed solidarity with the protesting lawyers and people of Balochistan.

Munir said that by voting for him lawyers had proved that they believed in democracy. He said he wanted unity in SCBA and that would not compromise his principles. He said SCBA would give a line of action for the upcoming general elections.

SCBA secretary Syed Zulfiqar Ali Bokhari said that because he had been secretary for a month he knew of the corruption by former SCBA office bearers. He said the stolen money would be recovered and spent on the welfare of SCBA members. Lawyer Hamid Khan condemned Justice (r) Malik Muhammad Qayyum for meeting President Pervez Musharraf. He said Musharraf was a dictator and that it was not right for an SCBA president to meet him.

Raja Imranul Haq, SCBA vice president from Balochistan, accused the government of killing innocent Baloch and demanded end to military operations in the province. He said that before Musharraf’s visit to Balochistan, hundreds of Baloch lawyers were arrested and some were still under arrest. He said that if the government did not release the lawyers, SCBA would get all bars together and work against the government.
